    Zero-Click Searches and AI SEO

Zero-click searches and AI SEO in the Google search engine

For years, every online store competed for the same thing: to rank as high as possible on Google's results page. First place was practically synonymous with success, because it meant more clicks, more visitors and ultimately more sales. In 2026, however, a completely new era began.

An increasing share of shoppers no longer browse websites — they ask artificial intelligence questions. Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI-based search engines summarize answers in a few seconds, and in many cases the user never clicks further.

    What is a Zero-Click search?

The Zero-Click phenomenon means that the user gets an answer to their question without opening a single website. Previously this was mainly typical of featured snippets or knowledge panels, but today AI-generated summaries have taken it to a completely new level.

According to some analyses, nearly 60% of Google searches now end without a click. What's more, based on data from nearly 800 Hungarian online stores analyzed by Growww Digital, in March 2026 the share of click-throughs from search engines dropped by 33% compared to the same period the previous year. This sounds frightening at first, but in reality it mainly signals that the buyer journey has changed.

Keywords are being replaced by questions

In the past, an interested user would type into Google: running shoes, robot vacuum or face cream. Today they are much more likely to search like this: 'Which running shoes are recommended for beginners with knee pain?', 'Which robot vacuum works well around small pets?' or 'What face cream is good for sensitive skin over 30?'

This is a huge difference. Artificial intelligence does not simply look for keywords — it tries to understand the user's real problem, then assembles an answer from multiple sources.

You're no longer competing for first place on Google

In the past, the goal of SEO was to rank as high as possible on the results page. Today a new goal has emerged: to be included in the AI's answer. If artificial intelligence quotes your content, references your website, or recommends your products, then you remain visible even when the user does not click on a single search result.

What makes an AI recommend an online store?

The AI does not decide based on advertising copy. It much rather examines how credible and how detailed the information about it is on the internet. This includes, for example, detailed product descriptions, genuine customer reviews, FAQ pages, professional blog articles, comparison content, structured product data and consistent brand communication. The more quality information is available, the more easily the AI can build reliable answers from it.

The purchasing decision is also being transformed

Artificial intelligence does not just search for information — it recommends, compares and argues. In fact, in some cases it already guides the buyer through the decision-making process. Early data shows that purchasing processes in which AI assisted the user achieved a significantly higher conversion rate than traditional searches. This means that the image the AI forms of you is becoming increasingly important.

How can you prepare for this?

Classic SEO is of course still important, but it is no longer enough. It is worth creating more detailed product descriptions; publishing your own research, statistics and case studies; regularly updating your content; encouraging customer reviews; writing expert blog posts; using structured data; and making sure your website contains all the important information.

    The future has already begun

Most online stores still only watch their Google rankings. Yet one of the biggest competitive advantages in the coming years will be who artificial intelligence recommends first. The question is no longer just what position your website holds in the search engine. It is much more about whether, when a shopper asks the AI which product or online store to choose, your brand appears in the answer.

The world of search has changed. The businesses that adapt to this new behavior in time will not only become more visible, but can also gain a serious long-term competitive advantage.
